Kostas Georgiou

Kostas Georgiou was born in Cairo, Egypt on 13/10/41. His father was Cypriot and his mother Greek. He graduated from Ampeteio college and he later studied engineering at the Italian University of Cairo. He was fluent in four languages; English, French, Italian and Arabic. He moved to Greece permanently in 1960 where he met his wife Eleni, with whom he had two children; Maria and Giorgos. Kostas Georgiou was a versatile character.

He worked as an engineer but from a young age he had a passion for journalism and he was interested in politics. He was elected in the Governing Board of Zoumberi’s Embellishing Association in Nea Makri, Athens and in November 1982 published the first issue of the newspaper “Zoumberi News” with Kosta Georgiou as editor and director. In 1982 he published the first issue of the local newspaper “Opinion” that he continued to publish until the end in 1996.

From a young age he showed an interest in cinema and from his teenage years, while he was still living in Cairo, he did not miss any movies. When he was watching older Hollywood, Italian or Greek films on television, it impressed his family that he could recall when they were released in the theaters, the names of all the actors, if they were still alive, who had married who and even in what studios they were filmed.

He was involved with cinema as an amateur, when he bought his first camera in 1975 and he recorded mainly scenes from his trips and the excursions he went on with his family, as well as children’s birthday parties, summer holidays, family gatherings and recreational outings; he stopped in 1987 when video cameras appeared on the market. He did the editing himself and in some films, mainly children’s birthdays he sketched cartoons by himself and created animated beginning and ending titles with them.

Kostas Georgiou suffered from acute leukemia for two months. He passed away on the 24th of December, 1996, at 23:00, at the age of 55. His amateur films were donated by his daughter, Maria Georgiou, to the company “of the Anonymous”, in December 2009. Their digitalization is almost complete, while their description is still in process.
